QUIETE VIOLENTA

Quiete Violenta is a thesis-based audiovisual project exploring the invisible violence of eating disorders, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is a story of control, silence, isolation, and obsession—told through a mix of research, film, symbolism, and visual experimentation. A work that reflects on the mental health crisis affecting today's youth, and the desperate need to see the unseen.

A story that doesn’t explain eating disorders.
It lets you feel them.

CONCEPT

How do you show a mental illness that hides so well?

This project gives a face and a form to anorexia nervosa. The disorder is transformed into a living presence—mold, worms, fire, fragmented reflections—haunting the protagonist as both predator and part of herself.

The narrative is non-linear, emotional, and visceral. The viewer is drawn into the internal corridors of a teenage girl’s mind, moving between personal memory and symbolic decay. It’s a visual descent into anxiety, identity loss, obsession, and finally, disappearance.

This is a project for those who suffer, and for those who love someone who does.
It speaks to parents, friends, classmates, and caregivers—inviting them to listen, understand, and never minimize.

RESEARCH & CONTEXT

Developed during the final year at NABA – Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti, the project is grounded in extensive research:

  • Impact of COVID-19 on adolescent mental health

  • Increase in eating disorders during lockdown

  • Social media and body image distortion

  • The lack of institutional response and emotional support

  • First-person testimonies from teens living with EDs

VISUAL STRUCTURE

The short film follows a rising emotional arc:

Beginning
Lockdown. Silence. Screens. Sleeplessness.
The girl wakes in a daze, disconnected and numb.

Middle
Control. Obsession. Ritual.
Food turns into numbers. A presence takes shape. The mirror cracks.

Ending
Fire. Mold. Isolation.
The illness consumes her.
She lays still. White text on a black screen remains.

If you or someone you love is struggling with an eating disorder, know that asking for help is not a weakness— it’s the beginning of something stronger than silence.
